A Stupid Story

For those of you who asked...

Susannah came down with a cold on Monday and Tuesday night she woke up at 1:00 am stuffed up and screaming. When saline and the "snot snatcher" didn't work, we started checking other possible problems and found she has a temperature of 100.9. The next step was riffling through all 1,000 of our baby books where we learned that with a temp somewhere between 100.4 and 101 you should take your baby to the hospital.

Like good (neurotic) parents we headed out to the emergency room where we learned that they treat all infant fevers on a worst case scenario basis until tests prove otherwise. The worst case is meningitus. Poor Susannah had her urine, blood, and spinal fluid tested, had a hep-lock inserted into her hand, spent the night in the emergency room, and then was whisked off to the pediatric ward for 48 hours of antibiotics and monitoring. Finally, on Friday afternoon the cultures that grew in the spinal fluid were deemed contaminates from withdrawal and she was given a ticket home. She promptly hid the escape ladder she had been fashioning, kissed the besotted nurses goodbye, organized Mommy and Granny, and led them home.

It was a harrowing experience for all and not an ideal birthday vacation for Granny. Susannah was, in true form, sunny and satisfied as long as she wasn't being poked or stuck and now our brave soldier is reunited with her beloved mobile. The cats thought they had gotten lucky but have to share their home again.

Thanks to all for the calls, emails and, even, prayers!

Much love!
